Eman al-Obeidy burst into a Tripoli hotel Saturday and told foreign journalists she had been raped by Gadhafi’s soldiers.
A government spokesman said al-Obeidy has been released and four soldiers are being investigated for allegedly raping her, but journalists in the country have not verified that she is out of custody. Al-Obeidy, 30, caused an uproar Saturday when she stormed into a Tripoli hotel that houses foreign journalists and began showing them bruises she said were caused by an assault at the hands of government soldiers. Government agents at the hotel attempted to silence her and attacked journalists, smashing their recording equipment. Security officials said al-Obeidy was mentally ill and dragged her away, claiming they were taking her to a hospital. As she was being removed, she warned, “If you don't see me tomorrow, then that's it."
