The group of broadcasters in charge of the Canada’s election debates has decided not to invite the Green Party leader.
This is supposed to be Elizabeth May’s year. The Green Party leader arguably has a better chance than ever of finally winning a seat in the House of Commons, but she may have to do it without the boost of participating in nationally televised debates. A spokesman for the group of broadcasters that hosts the debates said Tuesday that only the leaders whose parties are currently represented in Parliament will be allowed to participate, meaning May will be shut out. May was initially not invited to the leaders’ debates in 2008, but widespread outcry forced the broadcasters to allow her to appear. In that election the Green Party won 937,613 votes, or 6.78 per cent of popular support.
