Ashley Kirilow was given a 15-month conditional sentence Thursday.
The 23-year-old Ontario woman who bilked friends and family out of $12,000 by pretending she had cancer was sentenced to 10 months of house arrest and five months of strict curfew on Thursday after pleading guilty to outstanding fraud charges. Kirilow’s scam caused outrage across the country after it was revealed she set up a fake charity called Change for a Cure in order to accept donations for a disease she never had. She is currently living in the psychiatric ward of a Burlington hospital, which is where she will serve the first part of her house arrest. Her lawyers say she was traumatized by a dysfunctional childhood and that she perpetrated the scheme in order to gain attention, not money.
