A Florida woman convicted of having sex with a 16-year-old fled to Saskatchewan to escape a 'cruel and unusual' punishment.
An American woman sentenced to 30 years in prison for having sex with her son's 16-year-old friend has claimed refugee status in Canada to avoid being sent back across the border. Denise Harvey, a Florida native, fled to Saskatchewan with her husband last year after being sentenced for having sex with a minor, as the age of consent in that state is 18. Last week, the RCMP brought Harvey into custody to face an immigration hearing, where her lawyer said the sentence is cruel and unusual given the crime. The RCMP released Harvey on a $5,000 bond, while supporters back in Florida continue to petition for her pardon.
