Restrepo Director Killed in Libya

Tim Hetherington, one of the world's premier photojournalists, was hit by mortar fire while covering the siege of Misrata.

Tim Hetherington, a renowned British photojournalist who directed the Afghanistan War documentary Restrepo, was killed in Libya during an artillery siege of the city of Misrata. He died alongside another photojournalist, Chris Hondros of Getty Images, after they were hit while trying to escape mortar fire launched into rebel-held Misrata, the country's third largest city. He was 41. Hetherington had covered war zones such as Kosovo, Iraq, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Kashmir en route to garnering a Pulizer Prize nomination and a World Press Photo of the Year Award in 2007. Restrepo, which Hetherington co-directed with author Sebastian Junger, was nominated for an Oscar for its unrelenting look at the life of elite American sodiers assigned to the most vicious pocket of fighting in Afghanistan.
