About 80 per cent of all evacuees in Manitoba's record-setting flooding have come from the province's First Nations.
Manitoba's aboriginal population has borne the brunt of the damage caused by the province's worst flooding in recorded history. About four in five evacuees have come from First Nations beset by flooding, and they won't likely be able to return for a few weeks. Around 1,100 people have had to leave their homes due to the rising waters, mostly because roads to the often-remote communities have been completely washed over. More of the province is covered by floodwater now than at any point in Manitoba's history, while the Red and the Assiniboine rivers, the province's two largest, are both expected to crest either in or near Winnipeg between April 30 and election day, May 2.
