Shaw Considers Usage-Based Billing

The CEO of Shaw Communications says the company will likely modify its internet packages to charge extra for those who exceed bandwidth limits.

Shaw Communications, one of Canada's largest telecom companies, is planning to introduce a usage-based billing model for its internet subscribers. In a conference call with analysts, CEO Brad Shaw said the company was looking at forcing heavy users to pay a surcharge if they go over a certain threshold of bandwidth each month. A similar pricing scheme drawn up by Bell earned approval from the CRTC before a massive public backlash – and condemnation from Industry Minister Tony Clement – forced Bell to shelve the usage-based billing framework. Shaw's CEO says the company is considering implementing a plan much like Bell's, and will “clarify” the new pricing models by late spring.
