Tweettheresults.ca went offline at 7 p.m. EST, with the administrators backing down over the threat of fines.
Tweettheresults.ca, which had promised to aggregate live tweets of election results contrary to the Elections Act, has been taken offline until 10 p.m. EST. Under Section 329 of the act, broadcasting the results of any riding is illegal until all stations have closed at 10 p.m. Breaking the law can net a fine of as much as $25,000. The website's administrators took down the site as of 7 p.m. EST, when the first polling stations closed in Newfoundland and Labrador. A message on the site reads that “Rather than face a potential fine or protracted legal battle, we have taken this site offline for 3 hours. When free speech returns to Canada at 10 p.m. EST, the site will be back online and you will be able to read all the tweets that have accumulated in the interim.”
