Hundreds of young men have been taken into custody across Syria as President Bashar al-Assad attempts to smother the protest movement.
As many as 1,000 activists have been arrested in Syria since Saturday, in a massive security sweep that comes as the government intensifies its crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. More than 500 people have already been killed since demonstrations aimed at reforming the country ruled by President Bashar al-Assad began in March. State security forces reportedly went door to door over the weekend making arrests in cities that have witnessed the heaviest protests, targeting mostly men under the age of 40. Al Jazeera journalist Dorothy Parvaz has also been missing since landing in Damascus on Friday. Foreign journalists have been all but barred entry into Syria since protests began.
