The nation's top court will have two new faces by the end of the summer, in addition to two more before the next election.
Two Supreme Court of Canada justices said today they will retire this summer, allowing Prime Minister Stephen Harper to appoint two judges of his choosing to take their place. Justices Louise Charron and Ian Binnie told Justice Minister Rob Nicholson that they'd be stepping down from the nation's highest court on Aug. 30. Binnie, 72, has served on the Supreme Court since being appointed by Jean Chrétien in 1998, while Charron, 60, was appointed by Paul Martin in 2004. In addition to Binnie and Charron, Harper will get to replace Justices Louis LeBel and Morris Fish, who will both hit the mandatory retirement age of 75 before the next election.
