Claims that embassy officials were threatening Libyans opposed to Moammar Gadhafi lead to one of Ottawa's biggest expulsions in years.
The government is kicking five Libyan diplomats out of the country due to concerns that they were trying to intimidate Libyans living in Canada who are opposed to Moammar Gadhafi. The Department of Foreign Affairs said the five have a week to get themselves and their families back to Libya. The expulsions follow a number of complaints made by Libyan students living in Canada who say they received threatening phone calls because they participated in anti-Gadhafi demonstrations. One Libyan diplomat who defected to Canada says a representative from the embassy threatened his wife over charges of treason. Ambassador Abdulrahman Abututa is not among the five, and the Libyan Embassy in Ottawa is to remain open.
