Thousands of youth have been demonstrating for a week over their country’s high youth unemployment rate.
Spanish police say 25,000 young people are continuing to protest in Madrid despite the demonstration being deemed illegal. Thousands of people camped out in Puerta del Sol plaza on Saturday, making up the largest crowd yet in a week-long series of protests against high unemployment and the austerity measures of the Spanish government. What began as a spontaneous sit-in has grown into larger protests by the day. The youth joblessness rate is 45 per cent, more than double the country’s 21.3 per cent unemployment rate.
