Airlines across Europe are being warned of the travelling plume from Saturday's eruption, which can pose a threat to aircraft engines.
Flights could be disrupted this week across Europe as ash drifts over from Iceland's Grimsvotn volcano. Already the ash has partly closed airspace over Greenland, cancelling Air Greenland's flight to Copenhagen. A spokesman for the U.K.'s Civil Aviation Authority said flights will likely be delayed as the ash is predicted to cover Ireland, Scotland, and parts of Northern England. Norwegian aviation officials also reported Monday that the plume could affect flights to and from the Arctic islands of Svalbard. Airlines in France and Spain have also been warned the ash could start spreading their way by Thursday. The warnings are a precaution as volcanic ash can pose a threat to aircraft engines and disturb the normal air flow. The plume is not expected to affect trans-Atlantic flights.
