A monitoring group finds that Canada's efforts in combating bribery don't measure up against other G7 nations – and many, many more.
Canada is dead last among the G7 nations – and one of the worst of 40 countries – when it comes to tackling bribery and corruption, according to an annual ranking released by Transparency International. The watchdog concluded in its report that Canada's lack of strong legislation targeting companies and citizens engaged in bribery abroad is a chief concern as commerce becomes increasingly globalized. Likewise, the report said the RCMP don't have the resources to pursue corruption investigations, as only two cases of corruption in the past 15 years have been brought before the courts – less than one-hundredth of the number the U.S. has prosecuted.
