The always contentious issue of what borders would demarcate Israel and a new Palestinian state have distanced Harper from his G8 colleagues.
With the G8 summit underway in Deauville, France, Prime Minister Stephen Harper remains the only leader there who does not support Israel reverting to its pre-1967 borders, a key plank of U.S. President Barack Obama's Middle East peace plan. The summit is partly intended for the world powers to align their responses to the Arab Spring, and in particular, to agree to a path to statehood for Palestine and peace for Israel. British Prime Minister David Cameron and Obama made a joint appearance in London this week where they put aside differences over Israel to unite on the issue, but what impact Harper's reluctance to hop aboard will have on the summit remains to be seen.
