The mentally unstable 22-year-old who unleashed a massacre on Tuscon, Ariz., will have to be treated before he can be tried.
Jared Lee Loughner, the man accused of killing six people and seriously injuring U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, has been deemed unfit to stand trial. A federal judge in Phoenix ruled that owing to expert testimony that Loughner, 22, is severely schizophrenic, he should be remanded into custody to see if some sort of pharmaceutical treatment would make him coherent enough to be tried. Kelly McParland of the National Post poses a great question: "If he’s so nuts he can’t be tried for murder, how was he sane enough to buy the gun in the first place?" (Click here for its thoroughly depressing answer!) Giffords, on the other hand, has progressed well enough to have attended her husband's launch into space aboard the shuttle Endeavor this month.
