After 15 years without an NHL team, Winnipeg lands the cash-strapped Thrashers. Five bucks says they win the Stanley Cup before the Maple Leafs.
It's official: After weeks of rumours, the Atlanta Thrashers have been bought by owners who will move the franchise to Winnipeg. True North Sports and Entertainment, backed in part by billionaire David Thomson, announced their purchase this morning in the Manitoba capital, thronged by thousands of fans gathered for the news conference at The Forks. True North paid $170 million to buy the team and move it to Winnipeg, where it will play starting next season at the 15,000-seat MTS Centre in the heart of the city's downtown. Details about the team's name and logo have yet to be released but should be made public over the summer. A season-ticket drive is expected to be launched any day now.
