The Libyan leader remains committed to holding on to power while the death toll mounts.
South African President Jacob Zuma returned from meeting with Moammar Gadhafi empty-handed – the Libyan leader told him that he has no intention of stepping down after four months of war against a rebel movement. Zuma had gone to Libya on behalf of the African Union to seek a peace deal between Gadhafi and the rebels. NATO is committed to Gadhafi's ouster from power as essential to any deal. With the African Union's attempt ending in failure, few other brokers are available to mediate any peace negotiations, while reports of growing food shortages persist in besieged Tripoli.
