Faced with rising rates of drunk driving, the northern Ontario city is taking to public shaming.
Police in Sudbury, Ont., are about to start an unusual method to reduce drunk driving: posting the names of everyone who's been charged with the offence on their website. It's a practice used to target drunk drivers in Australia and parts of the U.S., and has been tried with johns who've solicited prostitutes in some jurisdictions in Canada. Every Tuesday, the Greater Sudbury Police Service will post the names of everyone charged by the department to tackle the increasing incidents of driving under the influence in the northern Ontario city. Civil rights groups are concerned that the public shaming compromises the assumption of innocence that everyone who is charged with a crime is entitled to.
