Hamza Ali al-Khateeb's death at the hands of Syrian forces has come to symbolize the country's uprising.

A 13-year-old boy who was tortured to death by Syrian authorities has become the face of both the Middle Eastern country's uprising and President Bashar al-Assad's brutal crackdown. A video (warning: very graphic) of Hamza Ali al-Khateeb's swollen, mutilated, bruised, bullet-ridden, and broken corpse was posted online shortly after Syrian police returned the boy's body to his parents last week. Hamza had been missing since April 29 from his hometown of Dera'a, a city in southern Syria where anti-government protests began in March. The video inspired massive rallies in Hamza's honour on Saturday, while more than 58,000 have joined a Facebook group dedicated to his memory.
