The youngest Speaker in Canadian history will be responsible for maintaining order in the House of Commons.
Conservative MP Andrew Scheer is the new Speaker of the House after beating out NDP MP Denise Savoie in the sixth round of voting. Scheer, at 32, is the youngest Speaker in Canada's history, and will now be responsible for maintaining order in an oft-cacophonic House of Commons. While he might be young, Scheer has represented the Saskatchewan riding of Regina–Qu'Appelle since 2004, and was one of three deputy speakers under the recently retired Peter Milliken. Eight MPs – seven Tories and Savoie – had originally put their names forward for the job, which includes a healthy pay raise, an estate in the Gatineau Hills, a car and driver, and a heckuva lot of headaches caused by ill-mannered politicians.
