Security Council to Vote on Syria Resolution

Western powers hope to condemn President Bashar al-Assad's crackdown, but could face roadblocks from China and Russia.

Britain and France are doing the heavy lifting once again against an Arab despot ruthlessly attacking his own citizens, as the two are set to introduce a UN resolution today condemning Syria. The Security Council resolution will call for an end to the violence and to allow humanitarian access to Syrian citizens, of whom some 1,100 have been killed by state security forces since the uprising began nearly three months ago. While the resolution will have the support of the U.S., a permanent member on the council, as well as that of Germany and Portugal, Russia and/or China could veto it due to their wariness of western meddling in the Middle East.
