Work stoppage could begin as early as Monday night.
The Canadian Auto Workers, which represents 3,800 Air Canada employees, issued a 72-hour strike notice to the airline Friday night, setting the stage for a possible work stoppage on Monday night, should the two sides not come to an agreement beforehand. The union and the airline had been negotiating for the past 10 weeks, but there are still a number of important issues in the way of a settlement. A key sticking point has been Air Canada's proposal to offer less-generous pensions to new hires, creating, the union says, a "two-tier workforce." Negotiations will continue throughout the weekend. The airline has a contingency service plan in effect if a strike were to occur.
