We take a second to pay our respects to IBM as it hits the century mark today. Microsoft, Apple – you guys have a long way to go.
IBM, or International Business Machines, as the high-tech company is officially known, celebrates its 100th birthday today. Founded June 16, 1911, in upstate New York, IBM began as the Computing Tabulating Recording Company, which manufactured and sold all sorts of machinery, from early recording equipment to cheese graters, before changing its name to IBM in 1924. Since then, the company has developed into a world leader in computer technology, working with NASA to put a man on the moon, developing the Universal Product Code, and releasing some of the first-ever commercially available computers. Today, IBM employs some 425,000 people worldwide, and is consistently regarded as one of the most progressive and innovative employers on the planet.
