Convictions of fraud and breach of trust will put the ex-Liberal senator behind bars for half a year.
Former senator Raymond Lavigne was sentenced to six months in jail today following his conviction in an Ontario court for fraud and breach of trust in March. Lavigne was found guilty of billing taxpayers for more than $10,000 in false travel claims – charges the former Liberal MP has denied throughout the case. Lavigne was forced to take a leave of absence from the Senate when the allegations first arose, but he continued to claim expenses and receive his full salary for four years while the investigation unfolded. Lavigne will also be under house arrest for six months upon his release from jail.
