The mother of the man who ran the Marathon of Hope did more for cancer research than nearly anyone else on the planet.

Betty Fox, Terry Fox's mother and the woman who stewarded his legacy en route to raising half a billion dollars for cancer research, has died due to complications from diabetes and arthritis. For 30 years she ran the Terry Fox Foundation and was integral in orchestrating the annual Terry Fox Runs around the world, which established her own legacy as a tireless advocate for cancer victims and their families. Fox, who last year helped carry the Canadian flag at the opening ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics, had spent the last few weeks of her life in a terminal care facility in Chilliwack, B.C. Fox was in her early 70s.
