A leading official in the Assad regime says it's committed to reforming the country, but we wouldn't hold our breath waiting for it.
The Syrian government's bid to bring a peaceful end to three months of protest grew bolder today with a promise from the country's foreign minister to have “an unprecedented example of democracy” within three months. Foreign Minister Walid Moallem, one of President Bashar al-Assad's closest advisers, said the government would usher in the rule of law, social justice, and more accountability if given the chance to hang on to power. Whether the thousands upon thousands of Syrian protesters buy into the line is a different matter altogether, considering that at least seven of them were killed yesterday by security forces.
