Rod Blagojevich

Blago Guilty on 17 Corruption Charges

Rod Blagojevich becomes the second consecutive Illinois governor to be sent to prison. Stunning architecture there, though.

Former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich has been convicted on 17 of 20 corruption charges, meaning the hilariously coiffed, silver-tongued politician could face as much as 300 years behind bars (not that he will). In addition to a bunch of other charges, the Illinois jury concluded that Blagojevich was guilty of trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by Barack Obama when he became president, as governors have the power to appoint Senate replacements. A previous trial ended in 2009 with a hung jury and just one conviction of lying to the FBI for Blagojevich, but the retrial makes certain “Blago” won't be making reality show appearences any time soon. Blago becomes the second consecutive Illinois governor to end his term behind bars, as his predecessor, George Ryan, is serving time for fraud convictions. This means that all current governor Pat Quinn has to do to claim a successful (by Illinois standards, at least) term is to not end up in federal prison.
