3,000 Displaced by Manitoba Flooding

The spring flooding season has crossed over into the summer, with the Souris River wreaking havoc on vacation plans across Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

The Prairies can't seem to get any relief from flooding, as rising water levels on the Souris River have forced nearly 3,000 people from southwest Manitoba to leave their homes before the river crests. The towns of Melita, Wawanesa, and Souris have all issued mandatory evacuation alerts as sandbagging efforts have been kicked into high gear ahead of the Canada Day long weekend. One of the tactics being used is to divert flood water to Lake Manitoba north of Winnipeg, but with that body of water already bloated from non-stop floods during the spring, there could be further flood risks for the homes and cottages that dot the lake's shores. And, just to make matters worse, the RCMP is now saying that looters have stolen televisions and electronics from evacuated homes in Saskatchewan in recent weeks.
