Under Canadian military law, soldiers can face alternative or lesser charges if the more serious ones, like manslaughter, don't stick.
Two Canadian soldiers are facing multiple charges, including manslaughter, in connection to the death of Cpl. Joshua Caleb Baker, who was killed in 2010 during a training exercise near Kandahar city, Afghanistan. A statement from the Department of National Defence released Wednesday said the officer in charge, Major Darryl Watts, and the range safety officer, Warrant Officer Paul Ravensdale, face six charges in the death of Baker and the injury of four other soldiers. Defence officials said via news release: "It is alleged that the proper safety procedures were not followed during the training exercise." Few details were released by the military about the circumstances surrounding Baker's death at the time of its occurrence.
