Four months after a March 11 earthquake killed more than 15,000 people, the nation is shaken yet again.
A 7.3-magnitude earthquake and small tsunami have hit Japan, in the same northeast region that was struck on March 11. The city of Higashimatsushima and the town of Otsuchi issued evacuation directives, with other municipalities urging residents to flee the area. There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage. The government’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency also said that no resulting problems have been detected at the nearby Fukushima Daini nuclear plant. The Fukushima Daiichi plant, which underwent severe damage and a nuclear crisis after the last earthquake, has not yet shown signs of being affected in the latest incident.
