Citizenship To Be Stripped from 1,800 Canadians

Fraudulent forms filled out by immigration consultants lead to 30 times more Canadians losing their citizenship this year than in the past four decades.
About 1,800 Canadians are about to lose their citizenship because they committed fraud when applying for it, says Immigration Minister Jason Kenney. The RCMP investigation claims that 1,800 new Canadians allegedly paid crooked immigration consultants to lie about their pasts or qualifications on citizenship application forms. Kenney said that many of those who will lose their citizenship live overseas as so-called “citizens of convenience,” although no proof has been offered to bolster those claims. Everyone who is stripped of their citizenship will get a chance to appeal. Only 63 Canadians have lost their citizenship in the past four decades. With the results of the RCMP investigation, that number has basically been multiplied by thirty overnight.
