Canadian Diplomats Ring up $20,000 Booze Tab in Kabul

Well, wouldn't YOU be hitting the bottle a little bit if you were posted to Kabul?

Canadian diplomats in Afghanistan ran up a tab of around $20,000 for alcohol between 2007 and 2010, which is totally understandable given that they're working in Afghanistan. While alcohol is technically illegal in the Central Asian country, diplomatic staff are provided with a hospitality budget to entertain other diplomats and dignitaries, although Canadian Press' investigative work found that a good chunk of the 3,000 bottle of booze staff drank over that time was for embassy staff-only functions, or when they hosted Canadian military officials. Which we're totally fine with. In fact, we can't think of a much better way to spend $20,000 from government coffers than on booze for embassy workers in one of the, umm, less hospitable places on the planet. The only issue we have is that their beers of choice appeared to be Heineken, Corona, and Beck's, which are fine, but come on – we couldn't get them any Alexander Keith's?
