The FDNY pays tribute to the Newfoundland town for hosting 6,000 travellers stranded by the 9/11 terror attacks.
A piece of steel from the World Trade Center will figure into a memorial dedicated to the town of Gander, N.L., for the help it gave during the 9/11 terror attacks. The Fire Department of New York is donating the section of steel beam to Gander's North Atlantic Aviation Museum to honour the city for hosting 38 airplanes and some 6,000 travellers when flights were rerouted and grounded due to the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. The population of the northeastern Newfoundland town nearly doubled for the days that air traffic was grounded throughout North America after the attacks, and gained prominence around the world for its hospitality. The memorial will be erected in time for the 10th anniversary of 9/11, less than two months from now.
