No Facial Recognition in Canada: Facebook

Aww, but we really wanted a massive social-networking company scanning all our faces and storing the data on their servers.
Facebook won't be introducing its facial-recognition technology in Canada any time soon, and for once, we're totally fine with not getting some high-tech wizardry that the U.S. has already had for a year. The program, which analyzes uploaded photos and suggests if you'd like to tag the people it recognizes in them, has stirred up considerable controversy in the States. Privacy rights groups say there users don't give informed consent to hand over sensitive biometric data to the program, as they must opt out of it to not be included. Facebook told The Globe and Mail that it doesn't have plans to roll out the feature in Canada any time soon, and we can guess it might have something to do with Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart, who's probably done more to stand up to the likes of Google and Facebook for privacy rights than any other person on the planet.
