Feds say 'lawful access', we say 'awful excess'.
Internet heroes OpenMedia.ca are picking up the Official Opposition's slack in launching an online campaign to bring attention to the Conservative government's planned lawful access Internet-monitoring legislation. OpenMedia.ca, along with a bunch of leading privacy and digital rights experts, posted an open letter to the prime minister, Justice Minister Rob Nicholson, and Public Safety Minister Vic Toews calling on them, and others in the House of Commons, to thoroughly review plans that would give police new powers to force Internet service providers to hand over user data without a warrant. The lawful access provisions are expected to be rolled into the massive omnibus crime bill that the Tories want passed within 100 days of Parliament sitting. OpenMedia.ca says they're worried these invasive measures won't get a proper examination by Parliamentary committees if the government is so intent on speeding along the bill's passage.
