Attacks launched from Egypt highlight border concerns along Israel's southern flank.
Unidentified assailants have launched four attacks in southern Israel near the Egyptian border, killing at least five people and wounding dozens. The first attack targeted a bus, which was hit by gunmen around midnight near the town of Eilat. When Israeli Defence Forces responded to the incident, they too were attacked by explosive devices. A civilian car was also struck by an anti-tank missile fired from Egypt, while mortar shells were launched from Egypt into Israeli territory. The attacks are one of the more deadly incidents in Israel in recent years, and highlight a growing problem over the security of the Israel-Egypt border in a post-Mubarak world.
