Nothing against Katy Perry (she's fine! Fun, even!), but pop music is in a sad state if Teenage Dream is the modern equivalent of Bad.
Katy Perry has matched Michael Jackson's 24-year-old record of having five singles from one album top the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, with her latest song, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” nabbing the top spot today. Perry's Teenage Dream has also spawned “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” and “ET.” Call us geezers or what have you, but those tracks don't come close to the cuts off of Jacko's Bad that topped the charts (“Dirty Diana,” “Man in the Mirror,” “Bad,” “I Just Can't Stop Loving You,” and “The Way You Make Me Feel”), and even then, most of those are some of his less-inspired singles. Perry's singles also spent a cumulative 17 weeks atop the charts, whereas the King of Pop only spent seven weeks there with the Bad singles. Congrats to Miss Perry, we guess. We're going to go put on our Victrola and spin some old Count Basie to remind us of the good ol' days.
