His body will lie in repose at City Hall until 8 p.m. Friday.
Thousands of people are lining up outside Toronto’s City Hall today for their chance to bid farewell to the late Leader of the Opposition. Jack Layton’s body arrived Thursday in his long-time battleground, Toronto, where it will lie in repose until Saturday’s state funeral. The casket was greeted by warm applause and the ringing of bicycle bells from a crowd that included Layton’s wife Olivia Chow, Mayor Rob Ford, and Provincial NDP Leader Andrea Horwath. Outside city hall, chalk-drawn tributes continue to be drawn in the city where Layton served for 18 years as a professor, city councillor, and MP. The CN Tower and Niagara Falls will be lit orange on Saturday in tribute.
