The 15-metre-long robot retires to suburban Montreal for all to see.
One of the three remaining Canadarms will be put on display at the Canadian Space Agency headquarters in St. Hubert, Que., now that NASA's space shuttle program has been retired. The giant robotic arm, built by SPAR Aerospace Ltd. of Toronto and first used in 1981, will be brought to its rightful home in the coming months and will be displayed for all to see at the suburban Montreal offices. The iconic arm had been used to maneuver payloads around space and to perform repairs, and while the Canadarm 2 is still being used by the International Space Station, the era of the so-called “Canadian Handshake” in space is officially over.
