Layton's wife and Toronto MP Olivia Chow says she will not lead the New Democratic Party.
As the NDP’s federal council prepares to meet next week to discuss the party’s leadership race, one thing is certain: there will be no Leader of the Opposition Olivia Chow. The wife of the late Jack Layton and NDP MP said she would continue to work in the House of Commons to push a public transit agenda, but insisted that she is not interested in leading the party. Many Canadians speculated about the prospect of Chow as a potential leader since the day of Layton’s death on August 22. Now that she’s out of the running, people are thinking it could be between deputy leaders Thomas Mulcair and Libby Davies. Or president Brian Topp. Or former press secretary Karl Belanger. (You know, those people most Canadians googled last month for the first time.) In related news, the Conservatives have accused the NDP of violating the Elections Act, and claim they received "contributions" from unions and businesses at the federal party’s summer convention.
