Two Polls, Two Different Stories in Ontario Election

The Sun papers say Tory support is up, while the Star says Tory support is way down in Toronto. We say it's all likely bunk.

Two polls are out this morning reporting two vastly different trends in the Ontario provincial election: The Sun chain released a poll saying the Progressive Conservatives now boast a nine-point lead over the Liberals, while a Toronto Star poll says the PCs are polling in third place in Toronto, well behind the Liberals and NDP. Beyond confirming the suspicions that readers have over the two papers' biases, the results either A), indicate a huge gulf in voting intention between Toronto (“We're Better Than You!”) and the rest of Ontario; or B), that most polls give a decent overview but are bunk when it comes to details. The Sun poll has the PCs at 41 per cent support among decided voters, with the Liberals trailing at 32 per cent and NDP at 20 per cent. Over at the Star, those numbers are basically reversed, with the Liberals at 39 per cent, the NDP at 30 per cent, and the Tories at a mere 24 per cent, down 10 per cent in the city over the last three months. The Toronto numbers don't bode well for PC Leader Tim Hudak's hopes of landing a majority government, as getting one would require him picking up at least a handful of the 23 seats in the 416. He currently has no seats in Toronto.
