Helle Thorning-Schmidt is set to become the first female prime minister of Denmark after a close election.
One of the most socially progressive countries in the world has now elected its very first female prime minister, voting in Social Democrat Helle Thorning-Schmidt to replace current leader Lars Lokke Rasmussen. No party has held an absolute majority in this Nordic country since the year Nixon was born and the zipper was invented, and this year will be no exception— Thorning-Schmidt will likely form a government with the Socialist People’s Party and perhaps the Social Liberals and leftist Red-Green Alliance. As leader of the country's first centre-left coalition in 10 years, she vows to steward the economy by making citizens work an extra 12 minutes per day and you know, investing in stuff. Finally, Hans Christian Andersen’s homeland has a woman in power. Just don’t tell queen Margrethe II.
