Tuition Up, Up, and Away

Canadian undergraduate tuition rose 4.3 per cent this year, despite only 2.7 per cent inflation.

Annual tuition fees for Canadian undergraduate students are now averaging $5,366, up 4.3 per cent from last year according to Statistic Canada. But the hikes didn’t cut evenly across the board, and it would seem the unluckiest students this year are in Ontario. In addition to facing the highest increase in tuition (up 5.1 per cent year), they also boasted the highest average annual tuition rate at $6,640. Quebec students fared best in the country, with an average tuition of only $2,519. The only provinces not to see increases were Newfoundland and Labrador, where tuition has been frozen for the last eight years. On the bright side, no one is as bad off as dentistry students, who on top of paying the highest undergraduate fees ($16,024 annually), also have to touch other people’s teeth.
