A Montreal man is nearly back home after circumnavigating the planet. On foot. For 11 years.
Jean Beliveau (no, not the hockey player) has almost finished walking around the world, 11 years after setting off from Montreal in the midst of a mid-life crisis. Beliveau, now 56, is in Ontario, and hopes to be back in Montreal by Oct. 16. After turning 45, Beliveau was forced to close his small business, and decided to basically run away from his problems, although he had the support of his girlfriend and kids to do so. So he ran. He ran far away: some 75,000 kilometres in total, across 64 countries, setting the record for the longest continuous walk on the planet. Along the way, he ended up in an Ethiopian prison, got deathly ill in Angola, was mugged by drunks in South Africa, and became intimately acquainted with homeless shelters the world around. We're going to go ahead and guess the guy needs a shower. Badly.
