'Occupy Wall Street' Heads to Canada

Protests arranged across the country for Oct. 15.
Protests against the global financial system are planned for later this month in Toronto's financial district as well as the downtown cores of nearly every major Canadian city. The protests are inspired by the ongoing sit-in on Wall Street in New York City, where hundreds of protesters have been arrested in recent days for shutting down traffic. Organizers of Occupy Wall Street say they're protesting the vast inequality between the world's wealthiest one per cent and just about everyone else, a trend they say has been abetted and accelerated by the kindly traders, bankers, and investors on Wall Street. Starting Oct. 15, protesters in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, and Newfoundland are set to take the same message to city streets. We don't quite understand why the Toronto organizers decided to go with "Occupy Toronto" instead of "Occupy Bay Street," but it at least ought to lend some life to an otherwise staid part of town. Similar protests are also planned for Japan, Mexico, Australia, and a number of countries in Europe.
