Bacteria Makes Rocket Fuel Out of Urine

In which the euphemism "Time to go burn off some rocket fuel" is born.
Dutch researchers have found a way to turn urine into rocket fuel, although we're still quite a ways off from pissing ourselves to Mars. The team from Radboud University Nijmegen accomplished the feat using a complex bacterium called anammox, which doesn't need oxygen to live and can change ammonia, the main chemical in urine, into hydrazine, which is used as fuel for rockets. The researchers were able to isolate the protein in the bacteria that triggered the chemical reaction, but they've so far only been able to create tiny amounts of hydrazine. They hope that further research into the bacteria could lead to greater yields of fuel, and so do we. Who wouldn't want to travel to outer space on a urine-powered rocket?
