B.C. Premier Wants Rioters' Trials Televised

Clark says if rioters want to burn cars and break windows in public, then they can own up to it in public, too.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark said she wants the province's justice system to consider televising the trials of everybody charged in the riot that broke out after the Vancouver Canucks lost to the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup final. Vancouver police have said they anticipate to have at least 40 rioters charged by the end of the month after facing months of criticism that they were taking far too long to track down offenders. Cameras are typically forbidden from Canadian courtrooms, but Clark said in her Throne Speech last night that since the rioters were willing to commit crimes in public, they might as well face up to them in front of the public, too. While only a presiding judge has the power to allow cameras into a courtroom, Clark will urge the Crown counsel in the rioting cases to file for permission to publicize the trials.
