Election Day in Ontario

The country's fourth election this week could also be its closest.
The country's most populous province heads to the polls today to decide which party gets to govern Ontario for the next four years. The Ontario general election is the fourth provincial or territorial election of the week, and Dalton McGuinty's Liberals are hoping that the trend of returning incumbents to office that has repeated in Prince Edward Island, the Northwest Territories, and Manitoba stays true in Ontario. Polls say both the Liberals and the Progressive Conservatives are essentially in a dead heat, with Andrea Horwath's NDP steadily increasing her support throughout the campaign. If the Liberals win a majority government, it will be the first time in decades that an Ontario premier will have won three consecutive majorities. Some 8.8 million voters are eligible to cast ballots today, but in the last election, a record low of only 52 per cent of them decided to show up.
