Is There a Gene for Suicide?

According to a study, probably, and it may be inhibited by alcohol.

Canadian researchers believe they may have uncovered a genetic risk factor for suicide. In a new study conducted at Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, scientists found a potential link between the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene and suicidial tendencies. Specifically, those who had a BDNF gene that contained a methionine variant were at increased risk. The team also found that 90 per cent of those who died from suicide suffered from at least one of schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder or a general mood disorder. The department’s director is hopeful that the discovery can someday help identify and predict those at highest risk of suicide, though he notes that environmental factors, substance abuse and psychiatric conditions still play an important role.
